About Liverpool: The Complete Record

120 years, eighteen League titles, and five European Cups after its birth, LIVERPOOL: THE COMPLETE RECORD, is the definitive account of one of the world’s most successful and famous clubs.

Arnie Baldursson and Gudmundur Magnusson - editors of the hugely popular LFChistory.net website - have spent years trawling through the archives to uncover every conceivable fact and figure about Liverpool FC. For the first time in a single volume they have painstakingly provided details of every game, line up, goalscorer, attendance and result, as well as a plethora of other facts and figures.

With full appendixes, detailing the careers of the hundreds of players to have turned out for the club, and a full narrative account of Liverpool’s amazing history, this is the must-read book for every fan of one of the best-supported clubs in the world.

  1. Not quite the complete record

Posted by anonymous on 3rd Sep 2011

This is the first such book to be published for over 20 years and was well overdue. The contents are excellent, it's not just rehashed material, every game has been checked against several different sources and it is undoubtly the most accurate record of the club to date.
As for the claims that it is the complete record, that is true in terms of first class games, but it doesn't include wartime line ups, for some reason no details at all are given for the clubs games in the 1945-46 War League North and I would also have liked to have seen details of friendly matches and games in minor competitions such as the Lancashire and Liverpool Senior Cups included. These are shown on the website and I don't know whether it was the authors or publishers descision not to include these.
That's just a personal thing though, many people will not be too bothered about that.
Despite the missing details, I still give this book five stars, for the amount of work which has gone into it, and the history section which includes stories and interviews with players from the time which no book in modern times has published.

  2. Five stars!

Posted by Kristján Atli on 11th Aug 2011

For full disclosure, I know both authors, mainly through the LFC Icelandic Supporters Club branch. Back in the day I did some writing for their website through which I communicated with both Arnie and Gudmundur, while they have in recent times been active participants in discussions on the Kop.is fora. However, though acquainted our relationship is casual enough for me to have no qualms about criticizing their work and pointing out any and all flaws I might come upon.

I tried my hardest, too, to find any flaws in 'Liverpool: The Complete Record'. Sadly, for the cynical critic in me, there were none to be found. I'm sure if searched for closely enough you can find spelling errors or minor details the authors themselves wish they had done better - as is always the case when large volumes of words are published - but for the last two days I've traversed its' pages and not only found no flaws but thoroughly enjoyed it. I cannot emphasise strongly enough how essential this book is for any passionate Red!

The book has a simple setup. After a short introduction begins the tale of Liverpool FC, from inception to modern day. The story is divided into chapters, each one detailing roughly one decade in the club's history. The story is linear, going from season to season and detailing noteworthy incidents in each, and is accompanied by statistical data such as final league tables, player appearances/goals, etc. for each season. This retelling of the club's history accounts for roughly 85% of the book's volume, the final 15% containing a long, alphabetical list of all players to have represented the club as well as a list of honours. Finally, the last few pages are dedicated to the Honor Roll, wherein those who pre-ordered the book have their names represented. I mention the Honor Roll specifically because the list is long, suggesting that there must have been considerable anticipation for this release.

And so there should be. The scale of what Arnie and Gudmundur have achieved with the publication of LFCHistory.net is difficult to put properly into words, for the website has been an endless source of information of any kind for any occasion any Liverpool-fans could find themselves in. By bringing that wealth of information into this linear, historical record they have essentially created LFCHistory's twin: for the wealth of data found online you now also have the wealth of history in printed prose. I'm pretty sure I will be flipping through this book on endless occasion in the future, probably as many times as I visit their website already, for it is filled with tales and accounts that might even surprise the most knowledgeable Liverpool-fan.

For example, who wouldn't want to read some of Bill Shankly's most classic tales of ingenuity? Or how political feuding was behind John Houlding's decision to separate Anfield from Everton FC and start a new club to rival his adversaries? (THANK YOU JOHN HOULDING!) Or how Liverpool almost bought both Michael Laudrup and Eric Cantona, on separate occasions, but managed to screw up both deals, missing out on legendary players? Or how Italian club Napoli almost bought Ian Rush but were unable to as Liverpool's representatives were too busy watching the Wimbledon-tournament in tennis to conclude a deal, leading Napoli to purchase one Diego Maradona instead?

This book tells the club's entire history and should hold something for everyone. For example, I found great symmetry in reading the chapter on Kenny Dalglish's first tenure as manager, some twenty years ago, and found much of it echoes the situation he faces now as he sets out on his second odyssey as boss.

Trust me, just get yourselves a copy. This is an essential book for any passionate Red, not to mention the best gift imaginable from one passionate Red to another. The book is beautifully bound with a coloured sleeve and will look good on any bookshelf. Five stars from me, great book! Arnie and Gudmundur, great job!

  4. So much more than a book of statistics - A "MUST HAVE" book

Posted by Karl Brodrick on 16th Jul 2011

Believe me, anyone who buys this book is in for a real treat.

To me stats are stats. It is always good to have a reference book that show every stat in our history and it will be a great aid to any writers. But, THIS BOOK offers so much more!

The storyline throughout the book reflects on life in Liverpool in each decade as well as snippets about the very early LEGENDS. Some names you may never of heard of, but after reading this book, their names will become etched in your memories.

Everybody knows how barmy I am about Billy Liddell and this book really does put him where he belongs.. into FOLKLORE.

The passages about Shankly will have everyone "laughing and crying" some of the information you will have heard before but that will not spoil the read, it will just refresh your memory about what a God he was. Other stories are new to me and as a "Shankly Addict" I drank them in with a great thirst.

As a historical writer I found the excerpts from the Liverpool Echo of the day "superb". I firmly believe this will become a "MUST HAVE" book.

"I've been bored shitless since the end of last season. But after reading this book I cant wait for next season to start, where we will write the next chapter in our Glorious history"

    Karl "Wooltonian" Brodrick
